Kenya currency is based on the decimal system. The unit of currency is the shilling, divided into 100 cents. Coins are denominated in 5,10, and 50 cents and 1, 5, and 20 shillings and notes in 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 shillings. Visitors should exchange any surplus Kenya currency at a bank prior to leaving. Kenya currency can be used for the payment of airport departure tax by non-Kenyans but not for purchases in airport duty free shops. It is illegal to destroy or deface Kenya currency and the offense carries the possibility of a fine and a prison sentence. Visitors are strongly advised to avoid 'street dealers' and to change currency only at banks or authorized hotels.
