The original inhabitants of Ireland seem to have come over from Britian and are generally refered to as Picts. By the 1st century AD though a Celtic migration had taken over the island leaving a people predominantly Celtic in origin. The next influx of peoples was during the Viking raids of the 9th and 10th centuries. This influx affected the port cities the most and remained relatively small. Since that time there has been no significant influx of people, though there has been a contant mixing with the people of England. Recently with Irelands economic boom there has been an increase in Polish and Eastern Europeans.
