  Travel in Atlanta

Travel in Atlanta Atlanta has risen high since the Union army burned it to the ground during the Civil War. Founded in 1837, it was nearly decimated by Federal General Sherman when Yankee troops took over the city. Over 10,000 people perished in the Battle of Atlanta and only about 400 of the almost 4,000 buildings remained standing. Many of those who died during the war are buried at Oakland Cemetery.

Since 1868 Atlanta is the capital of Georgia and home to many famous historic southerners such as Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind, and Martin Luther King Jr., whose homes are open for touring. The city now houses the industrial Turner Empire and the Coca-Cola headquarters. Pro sports are a major draw for the city which also hosted the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. Atlantia is a huge metropolis yet it holds true to 'Southern hospitality'.
