From 1840 to 1870 many families journeyed west by covered wagon along the Oregon Trail in search adventure, farmland, and a better life. Once they reached the three-month point of the trail along the Columbia River Gorge, they faced one of the most treacherous legs of the journey. Some travelers chose to brave the crashing river, while others decided to take the perilous Barstow Trail.
