Hiram M. Chittenden Locks

Hiram M. Chittenden Locks Approx. Time: 2 hours
Activity Level: Easy to Moderate

First of all, don't call them that. If you do, you'll get pegged as a tourist or a newcomer from California. The former is acceptable, but the latter might get you pushed into the canal, so call them what everyone in Seattle does: the Ballard Locks.

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks are always a great attraction. Late summer/early fall is a great time to enjoy the beautiful Carl S. English, Jr. Botanical Garden. The gift shop has a wonderful garden pamphlet which can help you find many of the rare and exotic plants waiting to be discovered. Every trip to the Locks should include a walk in the garden, watching the boats, visiting the fish ladder, and exploring the exhibits and gift shop in the Visitor Center
