It is said that the god of Maui captured the sun and kept it within the Haleakala crater in order to provide the island's inhabitants with more sunlit hours; hence the name, "House of the Sun." Hike the crater and reap splendid views from the rim. If you tread quietly you may see fleeting views of rare wildlife species.
