This historic area is near the pueblo where Los Angeles began in 1781. It encompasses 27 old buildings, 11 of which are open to the public. Visit the Old Plaza Church, the oldest church in the city built in 1822, a boarding house built in 1887, and wonder around the statue of Felipe de Neve, the founder of Los Angeles and the governor of California from 1775 to 1782. Another statue in the area includes that of Carlos III. This statue was dedicated by King Don Juan Carlos in Spain on the 200th anniversary of the United States Independence. Also in town are four restored museums, the Victorian visitor center, and Olvera Street's Mexican marketplace.
