The Colorado Avalanche has been a formidable team since its move from Quebec to Denver in 1995. Because the prior team name, Nordiques, was just too French for the mountain-region Denver locals, the name was changed to the Avalanche to foreshadow the team's seemingly out-of-nowhere whooshing icy blows.
