Paul Revere's famous ride down Massachusetts Avenue from Boston ended in Lexington to warn of the impeding British attack. This is where the first battle of the Revolutionary War ensued. Eight American Minutemen were slain during this heroic battle to deter British soldiers from the American stockpile of supplies in Concord -- a monument now stands in the Town Common as a tribute. Tour the Buckhorn Tavern and the Hancock-Clarke House Museum to view artifacts and hear a chronicle of that fateful battle.
Concord was a major battleground during the first few days of the Revolutionary War. The Minutemen National Park stands tribute to the tenacity of the American soldiers.
Lovely, verdant Concord also gave way to Thoreau's search for solitude at Walden Pond, and was home to many other early-American literary greats (their homes are open to the public): Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott, and Emerson. All four of their famous graves are situated within the eerie Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
