Over its long and eventful history, Winchester has seen it all: it's been the capital of England, it has been conquered by Normans and ransacked by Roundheads, it has given England the Doomsday Book and the English language the proverb: "If it rains on Swithus, it will rain for 40 days". This colorful history is alive and well in Winchester today. Winchester has just celebrated the 1100th anniversary of its most famous inhabitant, the Saxon king Alfred the Great. Alfred was a scholar, a soldier and a statesman who rebuilt Winchester and made it his capital after freeing the southern part of England from the tyranny of Viking rule.
