One of the world's most famous lighthouses, this triumph of 18th century engineering was built on the treacherous Eddystone Rocks, 14 miles out at sea, to the south west of Plymouth. When it was replaced by a larger lighthouse in 1882, Smeaton's Tower was moved stone by stone to its present site on the Hoe and has been Plymouth's most famous landmark ever since. The spectacular panoramic view extends over the city and Plymouth Sound to Dartmoor, Devon and Cornwall.
