Eilean a Cheo is the original Gaelic name for Isle of Skye. Wherever you go on the island, you will find the Gaelic language and culture still thriving giving Skye a distinctly different feel to mainland Scotland. In fact there is even a further education college called Sabhal Mor Ostaig dedicated to preserving and developing the language. Portree, the island's capital and commercial centre, offers a deep sheltered anchorage for cruise ships with a short run of less than 1,000 meters to the landing stage. Shopping opportunities at Portree include Skye Woollen Mill which features the Isle of Skye Tartan.
