Chester Zoo is the largest garden zoo in the UK, covering 110 acres. There are over 6000 animals from over 500 species. Well over half are from rare and endangered species, with successful breeding from three quarters of these. The zoo is famous for its large enclosures with natural barriers. It regularly wins awards for its gardens, which give a 'golden frame' to the collection. Chester has the largest breeding colony of chimpanzees in the country and the largest herd of Asiatic elephants. The new Monkey Islands exhibit - opened by the HRH The Duke of York in October 1997 it is the finest in Europe.
