An early 17th century country house complete with battlements and turrets designed by Robert and John Smythson for Sir Charles Cavendish. Perched on a wooded hill above the town on the site of a 12th century castle, the 'Little Castle' is decorated with allegorical frescoes and richly carved chimney pieces. There is a 350-year-old indoor riding house and ruined state rooms with an ideal picnic site and several special events featured every year.
