The Assembly Rooms, designed by John Wood the Younger in 1769, were used for evening 'assemblies' in the 18th Century, for dancing, music, card-playing and tea-drinking. Highlights of this fine set of public rooms include the original chandeliers and Gainsborough's portrait of the first Master of Ceremonies.
