For an interesting educational stop, trace South Africa's modern history here. The Voortrekker Monument and Museum displays the past of the early Boer pioneers, who came in the 1830s. The monument was built in 1949 to commemorate the Voortrekers pioneering spirit. This monolithic monument is a major landmark and is situated on a low hill, just outside Pretoria. Some regard it as an important memorial for Afrikanerdom, others see it as a reminder of Apartheid. Its interior frieze is said to be the second longest in the world. The monument has some of the finest sculpture work in South Africa. Courtesy of the South Africa Tourism Board
