Built in 1799 Fort Frederick is said to be the oldest British-built building south of the equator from which one can see the whole of Algoa Bay. The eighty-foot square and nine foot high walls were named for the Duke of York, Commander of the British Army, and once contained a powder magazine holding 2000 pounds of gun powder, while a full complement a 350 men were housed in nearby barracks.
