Shakaland Zulu Cultural Village

Shakaland Zulu Cultural Village Approx. Time: 6 hours
Activity Level: Easy to Moderate

Experience the essence of Africa: pulsating tribal rhythms, assegaai-wielding warriors and the mysterious rituals of the Sangoma interpreting messages from the spirits. This is the magic of Shakaland, one of South Africa’s most unique tourist attractions, tucked away in an indigenous setting of aloes and mimosa trees overlooking the Umhlatuze Lake. Originally recreated for the film sets of Shaka Zulu and John Ross, Shakaland is an unusual cross-cultural centre and living museum where Zulu folk pursue the customs and traditions of their forebears.
After viewing the fascinating audio-visual on the life of the great King Shaka, spend your evening around the camp fire savouring home-brewed tshwala, while being entertained with song, dances and folklore. Visual explanations of typical Zulu traditions such as beer brewing, spear making, hut building, pottery, weaving and beadwork, as well as lectures on traditional dress, Zulu etiquette and the layout and social structure of a Zulu kraal, is an education which will bring you closer to understanding this great nation.
A warm welcome awaits you at Shakaland. Take a step back into the history of the Zulu people at the Great Kraal of King Shaka and experience the mystery and magic that is Africa. Shakaland is beautifully set amongst mountains, rivers and a peaceful lake, a mere 160km north of Durban, offering a host of fascinating experiences that transport you into a different age: observe captivating Zulu ceremonies like courtship and beer drinking. Shakaland is located close to Eshowe, about 1 ˝ hours drive north of Durban.
