Belfast is one of the coldest places in South Africa, which, when combined with hot, dry summers, makes for one of the best climates to cultivate tulips. With these ideal conditions, Belfast has quickly become famous for its tulip bulb industry. However, instead of taking advantage of the tulip’s perennial nature, the city does not bloom the flowers but rather exports about six billion bulbs annually. The area also does heavy amounts of mining in black granite, coal, iron and chrome, and also has growing trout-fishing industry. The Berg-en-Dal Monument, which remembers soldiers from the Anglo Boer War, is located just outside Belfast.
