Anthropology enthusiasts should not miss this home of the "missing link." The Taung Site is where the long sought after 2.5-million-year-old “missing link” skull was finally found! Known as Australopithecus africanus, this famous fossil first demonstrated hominid origins in Africa. The Taung Heritage Site is dedicated to the discovery of this early hominid, named "Australopithecus africanus" meaning the "southern ape of Africa". A monument to the discovery is at the site and an old mine tunnel has been opened for exploration.
