A quiet little town near Dullstroom, Machadodorp is a great place for fly-fishing, or exploring less crowded hills and rivers. Machadodorp is known for its temperate climate and superb trout fishing waters The Elands River runs through the town and Machadodorp's natural sulphur which are said to have healing properties. The town is a repository for numerous turn-of-the-century buildings.

Machadodorp is situated at an altitude of 1904m above sea level. Machadodorp was proclaimed as a village in 1904. The town is named after General Joachim Jose Machado, later Governor General of Mozambique.
