Lesedi Cultural Village

Lesedi Cultural Village Approx. Time: 4 hours
Activity Level: Easy to Moderate

Nestling in the pristine bushveld at the foot of the Magaliesberg Mountains, North of Johannesburg (1 hour), lies Lesedi, where families from the Zulu warrior nation, the proud Xhosa, the warm-hearted Pedi, and the mountain dwelling Basotho, live in their traditional homesteads. Lesedi awaits those willing to participate in an adventure that reveals the mystical cultures of these ancient peoples, steeped in tribal folklore and ancestral traditions. Whoever walks here amongst our cultures at Lesedi can also see the light.

This is a getaway that turns into a homecoming. Lesedi presents a culture shock of a wonderful kind but it’s not a mere tourist drive-by of traditional crafts and costumes. At Lesedi the emphasis is on participation: visitors stay over as guests of an African family and share in their rituals and routines. Four different villages, Xhosa, Pedi, Zulu have been laid out among the trees and the olifantklip of this most beautiful part of the Highveld. The homesteads have been built in the traditional style by craftsmen and women brought from all over South Africa. Each is inhabited by a family of elders, their wives, and their children. In each village, a few huts (with all mod cons) have been set aside to enable visitors to experience African culture first hand.

There are both morning and afternoon experiences. You can also stay overnight in one of their traditional guest huts.
