Beautiful Pretoria is known as the “Jacaranda City”. Visit the Voortrekker Monument, a large granite edifice that incorporates a museum commemorating the Great Trek. Visit Church Square that is surrounded by fine old buildings, including the Old Raadsaal (parliament) and the Palace of Justice. The impressive Union Buildings were designed by Sir Herbert Baker and completed in 1913. Considered by many to be the architect’s greatest achievement and South Africa's finest architectural masterpiece, this was the site for the inauguration of Nelson Mandela (10 May 1994) and Thabo Mbeki (16 June 1999 &27 April 2004).
