The Place en Nejjarin is a modern manifestation of the lasting influence of traditional Moroccan modes of commerce upon present-day culture. This popular site, whose name translates to "The Carpenter's Square," contains a souk in which some of the country's best woodworkers reveal the secrets of their skillful trade and sell their richly decorated handicrafts. At the south side of the square, the imposing
foundouk, a former student's hostel, has been restored through the efforts of UNESCO and has been recently designated a place to display the works of local artisans.
