Mellah (Jewish Quarter)

Mellah (Jewish Quarter) Approx. Time: 1 hours
Activity Level: Easiest

A term of Arabic origin, mellah traditionally designates the Jewish area of a Moroccan city. However, today, Fez's mellah, the largest in Morocco, houses a predominantly Muslim population in charming houses with intricately handcrafted wooden balconies and terraces. Remnants of the Jewish influence in the mellah can be seen in the Habanim Synagogue, presently being converted to a museum of Judaic history, and in the plaintive Hebrew Cemetery whose etched gravestones are a reminder of a culture whose physical presence has diminished but whose influence remains steadfast.
