Fez el Bali

Fez el Bali Approx. Time: 3 hours
Activity Level: Easy to Moderate

A fascinating warren of narrow, serpentine streets and secret alleys, Fez el Bali has two distinctly different districts, one built in the 8th century by 8,000 Arab families when they were expelled from Andalusia by the Christian armies, and the other established by 2,000 Kerouan families. Its history created by the melding of two disparate cultures, Fez El Bali simultaneously reflects the contribution of Andalusian culture in its art and splendid mosques of stucco and mosaic, while the Kerouan legacy thrives in such structures as Kairaouine, the first university in the western world.
