There are many madrasas — Islamic schools in Fes. Dating from the early 14th century, this lavish example of Merinid architecture has won its fame as much for its legendary costs and extravagance as for its intricate ornamentation and exquisite design. The structure, originally built as a student's residence, is now considered by many to be a paramount achievement in Islamic architecture. The medersa also contains the remains of a
magana, an ingeniously devised water clock created circa 1317, which long ago served to call the residents of Bou Inania to their daily worship rituals and whose workings remain a mystery to scholars of today.
