Built under the guidance of the Merenid sultans, the Attarin Medersa is one of Fez's most celebrated medieval universities. The buildings which comprise this medersa evidence the traditional communion between Islamic architecture and mathematic theory, especially in the field of geometry. The design is of a conventional style, with a lavish entrance, a spacious, verdant courtyard, a solemn prayer hall, and a series of ascetic student dormitories. However, upon closer inspection, the buildings reveal an unparalleled attention to detail and devotion to the science of architecture, possessing such complex decorative marvels as a wall forged of wood and stucco and patterned with a myriad of intermingling geometric shapes.
