Possibly the world's biggest game sanctuary. On the east side roam 'red' Elephants, named from the color of rich earth of the area they throw over themselves. On the west are the Mzima springs where Hippo and Crocodile bathe. A model national park in geographic, animal and plant diversity, situated halfway between Nairobi and Mombasa - making it ideal for those wanting to include both safari and coast on their itinerary. In the evening Tsavo Sunsets' span the sky filling the horizon with incredible color. The combined areas of Tsavo's East and West National Parks make up one of the worlds largest game sanctuaries - larger than Wales or the island of Jamaica! It covers more than 20,000km. (7,720 sq. miles) and lies roughly halfway between Nairobi and Mombasa. It is therefore a logical choice for those wishing to combine the wonders of a safari and the magic of Kenya's coast. More than 20,000km. of well maintained and well-signed roads lead from one natural wonder to another. Chief among these is Mzima Springs, replenished each day with twenty million litters of crystal clear water, bubbling up from underground springs flowing from the nearby Chyulu Hills. The Springs are a haven for a rich variety of wildlife. Elephants, hippos, and crocodiles enjoys the waters while gazelles, zebras and giraffes wander along the banks of the oasis. An observation platform and an underwater glass-walled tank provide visitors with an unusual opportunity to observe the natural life of the Spring both above and below water. Tsavo's wildlife includes many lions - some undoubtedly descended from the famous "Man Eaters of Tsavo" encountered during the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway from Mombasa to Nairobi.
