Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves cover 532 square kilometers together with the Shaba reserve. This region is totally different in the scenery or the climate than the ones of the Aberdares or Mount Kenya, seen when leaving Nairobi. Its natural setting includes dead volcanoes, dry mountains, acacias and Doum palm trees, with a dry and hot climate. The two reserves are split by the Ewaso Ngiro river, which comes from the highlands and provides water to this arid area. Only a few nomadic tribes live there, such as the Nilotics, Samburus or Turkanas. The Samburu tribe, close to the Masai, lives as far as Maralal. There are many animals in this reserve: elephants, buffaloes, cheetahs, leopards, lions, Grant’s gazelles, gerenuks, dik-diks… as well as some rare species such as Grevy zebras, reticulated giraffes and Somalia ostriches. The variety and number of birds, especially birds of prey, are worth the detour.
