Bathe in the 17 hot springs in Hakone, about a 90min commute out of Tokyo, noted for their medicinal qualities. For the longest time until the middle of the Meiji Period there were only 7 noted hot springs, collectively called Hakone Shichi-Toh Zue. These are – Yumoto, Tonosawa, Miyanoshita, Dogashima, Niwakura, Kiga, and Ashinoyu. The hot springs, except Ashinoyu, are located along a mountain stream of the Haya River in the center of the Hakone region. It is believed that these hot springs are good for several diseases like - rheumatism, high blood pressure, skin sickness, women's diseases, digestion problems, etc. Most of them have a high sodium chloride content.
