One of Japan's finest examples of a traditional tsukiyama-type landscape garden. Rikugien Garden was designed by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a confidential junior minister under the fifth Tokugawa Shogun Tsunayoshi, on the land he received from the Shogun in 1695. Rikugien features small artificial hills and ponds and symbolizes the multiplicity and grandeur of nature in a limited space. The garden has been designated a Special Scenic Spot by the national government. Courtesy of Japan Tourism Board.
