Kamakura - Egaraten Shrine

This is one of Japan's three famous shrines. It is dedicated to the deified spirit of Sugawara Michizane who is the god of scholarship. In legend this shrine was built because a picture of the Tenjin god, or the deified spirit of Sugawara Michizane, fell to this place from the sky during a rain storm.
