An impressive building with exquisite Japanese-style architecture. The Imperial Palace stands on the former site of Edo Castle, the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate from 1603 to 1867. Today's Palace occupies the area within Edo Castle's inner moat. The Imperial Palace grounds in the western enclosure are the former site of the residences of shogunal officials during the Edo period (1600-1868). Today these grounds are only open to the general public on January 2 and the Emperor's birthday when the Imperial Family greets the public from the balcony of the Imperial Palace. Niju Bridge stretches over the moat to the principal gate leading into the western enclosure. Overlooking the bridge and the moat is beautiful Fushimi Turret, which dates from the days of Edo Castle. The bridge and the turret cast an elegant reflection in the moat, making this one of Tokyo's most famous spots. Courtesy of Japan Tourism Board.
