Japan's most modern and fashionable shopping district since the Meiji period (1868-1912). In fact, local shopping areas throughout the nation were named after this famous district in Tokyo in the hopes that they would have similar success. Today Ginza is an elegant district, boasting a more refined atmosphere than other shopping areas. Known throughout the world, Ginza is a must-see for foreign visitors to Tokyo. It offers excellent window shopping with its major department stores, boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, and coffee shops.
