Daisetsuzan National Park is Japan's largest national park. It has several mountain groups, volcanoes, lakes and forests. It is spectacular hiking and skiing territory. The center of the park is the Daisetsuzan mountain range with its highest peaks Mt.Asahidake and Mt.Kurodake. Interesting places to see/visit are Tenninkyo, Sounkyo, Asahidake Onsen, Furano and Tokachidake Onsen. The main gateways to the park are Asahikawa and Kamikawa in the north, Kitami in the east and Obihiro in the south.
From Asahikawa it takes 1.15 hour to Kamikawa on the JR Sekihoku line, from there you can reach Sounkyo in 32 minutes by bus. Courtesy of Japan Tourism Board.
