Iriomote Island is said to be the last land of mystery in Japan. It is approximately 130kms in perimeter and is located in the west of Ishigaki Island. The island is mostly mountainous, over 90% of which is covered with tropical and subtropical virgin forests. Most of it is literally an untouched jungle. The climate of Iriomote is much closer to tropical than subtropical. Overwhelming rainfall creates a tropical rain forest climate here. The rare species of animals and plants such as "Iriomote lynx", "Serpent eagles", and "Semaruhakogame(turtle)" live here even today. Even the sea around Iriomote Island has an underwater jungle of coral reefs, offering numerous diving spots. Courtesy of Japan Tourism Board.
