The popular Aoi Matsuri festival is held at this antique shrine. Shimogamo Shrine, in the dense Tadasuno-Mori Forest, is well-known for its hollyhock Aoi Matsuri (Festival) and is located near the confluence of the Kamo and Takano Rivers. Along with its sister Kamigamo Shrine, it was founded long before Kyoto.
