This particular temple is the fountainhead for Jodo-Shinshu Buddhism. Nishi-Honganji Temple, one of the finest examples of Buddhist architecture in Kyoto, was founded in 1272 in Higashiyama but moved to its present site in 1591. Jodo-Shinshu Buddhism is one of the largest sects in the country.
