Ise-Jingu Shrine

Ise-Jingu Shrine Approx. Time: 3 hours
Activity Level: Easiest

Ise-Jingu Shrine (Japan’s most sacred Shinto center) Jingu Shrine in Ise City consists of two major shrines: the inner and outer shrines, and other affiliated shrines. The inner shrine enshrines the sun goddess, from whom the imperial family claimed descent, and the outer shrine, about 3.7 miles away from the other, is dedicated to the goddess of agriculture and sericulture. According to legend the shrine has been standing for 2000 years, which makes it the most ancient and sacred of the Shinto shrines in Japan. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect about the shrine happens every 20 years when the wooden buildings are completely rebuilt and rededicated to the enshrined goddesses. The 61st rebuilding was completed in 1993. The visiting public is allowed to approach the main building only once every 20 years at a ceremony prior to the rededication, a rare opportunity to experience the solemnity of the shrine.
