One of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in the world, The Golden Pavilion is located in the northern hills of Kyoto. The Yoshimitsu, the third Ashikaga shogun, constructed the pavilion in 1398 as part of a much larger villa complex that combined Heian residential and Zen Buddhist styles.
