A national treasure and regarded as one of the three most beautiful sights in Japan, Itsukushima Shrine has been standing in the sea for almost 800 years.
The concept of building a shrine standing in the sea was either an attempt to build the mythical Rygu-jo (Dragon Palace) or because the enshrined goddess is the goddess of the sea. In December 1996 the shrine was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
