Arguably one of the finest Cathedrals in all the world, St. Peter’s is the product of the Renaissance’s finest son, Michelangelo (the dome was based upon Brunelleschi’s Duomo in Florence). The spiritual center of the Vatican, St. Peter’s never fails to overwhelm, if only out of pure grandeur and scope. The most beautiful work inside is Michelangelo’s Pieta, considered by many to be the most moving piece of sculpture ever created. Other highlights include a unique baldachino over the Papal altar.
