Emerald Grotto

Emerald Grotto Approx. Time: 2 hours
Activity Level: Easy to Moderate

Set in the bay of Conca dei Marini, the Emerald Grotto is a charming attraction. The cave can be reached by road using a lift or stairs, or by sea. Discovered by a sailor in 1932, the Grotto measures about 60x30 meters and goes to a depth of about 25 meters at its deepest. Named for the color reflected in the water, the Emerald Grotto offers many fascinating geologic structures. There are many stalagmitic structures rising from the sea that could have never formed if the cave had not been on dry ground at one time. Also in the Grotto is an underwater pottery crib, resembling a scene from the Nativity.
