This is another city that few tourists frequent, and that is just too bad for them, because they are missing something truly unique. Bergamo is where the famous Commedia dell'Arte originated, where masked players poke fun at the rustics, most notably Harlequin. Bergamo's citizens adore music, and it was the birthplace of the composer Donizetti. The new part of the city is airy and pleasant, while the upper old town is quiet and very picturesque. You take a funicular up to the old town, which is protected by 16th century Venetian walls. Here you will see the Palazzo della Ragione, the oldest communal center in Italy, dating back to 1199, and the Colleoni Chapel, whose facade is covered with precious multicolored marble and lavishly decorated with delicate sculptures.
