A fascinating church both inside and out, Sienna’s Cathedral, or Duomo serves as an historic reminder of the sad fate of the city. For centuries the powerful rival of Florence, Sienna began a massive expansion of the cathedral before falling victim to a brutal and devastating visitation of the Plague. The disease wiped out most of the populace and the city never recovered, nor did it finish the expansion of the church – the unfinished wing of which still stands in powerful testimony to the fate of the city. This beautiful church is immediately recognizable for its unique zebra-striped appearance.
