Beautiful, compact, and breathtaking, Florence's Baptistery is a perfect complement to the Duomo. The third and most compact attraction in the Piazza del Duomo, the Baptistery is an attractive little building dating from the turn of the millennium. While still functioning for its original purpose, its most noted attraction is the doorway facing the Cathedral. The large bronze doors are impressed with incredibly complex and beautiful panels depicting familiar stories from the Bible. There was a famous contest to decide who would create the door (dubbed “The Gates of Paradise” by Michelangelo); the winner was Ghiberti, and the loser was Brunelleschi (who instead designed and built the dome of the Cathedral). Don’t miss the interior frescos; they are a treat too often overlooked by the casual tourist.
