  Travel in Jerusalem

Travel in Jerusalem No trip to Israel is complete without a visit to Jerusalem, the capital of Israel. Jerusalem is a unique combination of natural beauty - surrounded by undulating hills and forests - and the beauty that comes from varied building styles, representing many cultures and periods, but uniformly constructed in the locally quarried Jerusalem stone. A wall with eight gates surrounds the Old City of Jerusalem. It is divided into four quarters: the Jewish, the Armenian, the Muslim and the Christian.
Jerusalem is a city venerated by Jews, Christians and Muslims alike. Conquered by David about 1000 BCE, the site of Solomon's First Temple, Jerusalem was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzer and rebuilt by Ezra and Nehemiah. Herod enlarged and beautified the Second Temple, which was later destroyed by Titus in 70 CE leaving only the Western Wall, Jewry's holiest site. Jesus' ministry in Jerusalem was marked by miracles at Bethesda and Bethany, his Triumphal Entry during Passion Week, the Last Supper, the route He followed on the Via Dolorosa, His Crucifixion, Burial and Resurrection. The Romans rebuilt Jerusalem after Bar Kochva's revolt and renamed it Aelia Capitolina. In 632 the city was conquered by Moslems, who built the Dome of the Rock on the Temple site. It was stormed by Crusaders in 1099 and retaken by Saladin in 1187. The Old City Wall in its present form was built by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century.
