As Jerusalem's main fortress and military garrison for more than 2000 years, the citadel bears evidence of all the city's conquerors. There are remnants from as early as the Hasmonean Period (164 BCE - 63CE). During the period of the Ottoman conquest (starting 1516), the citadel was reconstructed and the tower added. Today, the building houses the Citadel Museum of the History of Jerusalem.
