With an area of 400 sq km encompassing rocky hill crests which descend to open valleys, this park gets its name from the thousand year old fort which looms large over the forest. Well known for the diurnal activity of its tigers, Ranthambore is a very special and unusual place where a natural present meets a historical past. Dotted across the landscape are crumbling ruins of its past glory, be it chhatris or cuppolas, lake palaces or old guard posts, re-inforcing the magical and ethereal quality of this great wilderness. Probably one of the finest habitats for the sambar, the rugged and varied terrain also suits the nilgai and one of the more endangered species of cats, the caracal. In the past five years, Ranthambore has become one of the finest places to view the tiger in the wild.
